My sister Holley, niece Jasna and brother-in-law Primož Benza visited us for the Holiday and New Year. Holley has lived in Goriška Brda, Slovenia for the past 6 years. She is the photographer behind the Briško Zlato, 'Golden Hills' label. Primož is the head chef at the KABAJ Guesthouse, he is also involved in the cellar and vineyards.
They brought delights we can't import, Brda olive oils and herbaceous schnapps. And a t-shirt, from a local farm store, illustration below. It is a wall outside the Brda village of Gonjače that since the 80's was painted with the words VSAK PATK DISKO. VSAK PATK DISKO means 'EVERY FRIDAY DISCO' in a dialect so local, even Slovenians from outside of Brda struggled to understand it. The words were impossible to erase. As soon quickly as it was painted over it was repainted. It was adored and despised until around 2021 when the whole wall was replaced.

VSAK PATK DISKO began in the mid 80's as a weekly Friday music gathering in the Brda village of Hum. It became part of a dynamic local music scene that welcomed banned musicians who could not easily perform in urban Slovenia due to the political situation at that time. The border between Socialist Yugoslavia and Italy was drawn in 1945 following the devastation of WWII. This 144 miles of border was what separated Western Capitalism and Yugoslav Socialism until 1992. The 80's were a revolutionary period filled with uncertainty, fear and hope. This is the historical pattern of this part of Europe and skepticism of authority is strong here.
Shortly after the wall renovation in 2021, VSAK PATK DISKO reappeared even larger. Today it is a symbol of local artistic solidarity and a remembrance of the special music scene of rural Brda in the 80's. A scene that has evolved and persisted. In the 90's Primož helped organize local metal shows, often in abandoned castles. He remains involved with this unique border region music scene.
